For one week this community becomes the 5th largest city in the state of Nevada.
The ephemeral city lives and dies in seven days when “the man” burns. The man is a symbolic statue made of wood and built in the center of the city.
The experiment will be extreme.
Intense heat, sandstorms, no shade, no shops ! Each one must live in total autonomy while bringing their own food... and if possible positive vibes !!
In 1986, Larry Harvey, creates this event, by burning a 10 foot wooden statue on Baker Beach,San Francisco. It is an homage to the summer solstice. He does not imagine that 20 years later, Burning Man will gather tens of thousands of participants.
Now, people come from all over the United States and the world. Intrigued and curious. Larry Harvey explains the rules. They are simple. Radical self expression and creation are absolute. Here money does not exist. It’s a pure gift economy . And the event is not sponsored...
At Burning Man, you will find neither fast food nor advertisements for a beer company. |
